Antioxidant activity of collagen peptides from three kinds of abalone foot muscle

Abstract: Isolation and characterization of collagen from Haliotis discus hannai, Haliotis iris and their hybrid abalone were studied, the total reducing power, O-2· and ·OH radical scavenging rate and changes of MDA、SOD and GSH-PX of induced aging mice by gavage collagen peptides were used to assess collagen peptides antioxidant activity. The results showed that the collagen of H. discus hannai, H. iris and their hybrid accounted for 23.44%, 30.78% and 26.92% of the total protein content, respectively. H. discus hannai and the hybrid abalone contained α1, α2, β and γ chains, but H. iris did not contain γ chains. All three collagen peptides showed high level of reducing power as well as O-2· and ·OH radical scavenging ability. IC50 values of O-2·radical scavenging were 3.03, 2.40 and 1.15 g/L respectively, and IC50 values of ·OH radical scavenging were 4.12, 3.58 and 3.70 g/L respectively. After the three peptides were gavaged to induced aging mices, the MDA content of liver and serum decreased and SOD content and GSH-PX activity increased. The hybrid abalone was the strongest in reducing MDA content and strengthening GSH-PX activity while H. iris was the most effective in increasing SOD.
